GenePix 4000 Microarray Scanner

The GenePix 4000 from Axon instruments is a fully integrated microarray scanning and software system. The scanner reads DNA microarrays using a dual laser format. The two lasers allow different channels of light to be scanned simultaneously. The signal arising from the different fluorophores used in competitive hybridizations are collected at the same time. Pixel intensity data in both channels are statistically treated to generate a normalized and background subtracted value. The data output is in the form of a ratio value for each feature on the microarray. This ratio represents the signal intensity of one fluorophore to the other for that feature. This translates as the relative amount of a particular mRNA present in the two samples assayed.
